A fruit tree is a tree bearing fruit that is consumed or used by people — all trees that are flowering plants produce fruit, which are the ripened ovary of a flower containing one or more seeds. In horticultural usage, the term ‘fruit tree’ is limited to those that provide fruit for human food.

An Oak Spring Pomona : A Selection of the Rare Books on Fruit in the Oak Spring Garden Library

This work is the second in a series of catalogues describing selections of rare books and other material in the Oak Spring Garden Library, a collection formed by Mrs Paul Mellon. The “Pomona” describes 100 books and manuscripts about fruit, with illustrations taken from some of the most beautiful books on the subject as well as from original drawings and paintings. The earliest book described is Bussato’s “Guardian di Agricoltura” of 1592, the latest “The Hereforshire Pomona” an encyclopedia of apples and pears from the 1870s. In between there are fruit books large and small – La Quintinie’s “Instruction pour les Jardins fruitiers”, Duhamel’s “Traite des Arbres fruitiers”, and many others. The book is divided into sections on fruit growing in France and Britain, fruit elsewhere in Europe, and fruit in America, as well as citrus fruit, apples and pears, peaches and soft fruit, grapes, melons, and tropical fruit. Each description gives the background of the book and its relationship to others and is accompanied by illustrations of its contents in color and black and white. The “Pomona” includes not only brief bibliographical summaries of each book but also background essays that place the books in an historical setting.

Day 35: I ventured out for my shot of the day, as I couldn’t bear to take another shot indoors. I don’t want to catalogue my entire house quite yet. As I was out running an errand, I managed to get this shot of a branch and its fruit. I’m not a horticulturist, gardener, or anything of the sort. I have no idea what type of tree this is from. I do know it broke up the monotony of searching for something around the house. Cheers!

This work was painted in Argenteuil, a village on the Seine northwest of Paris that was a favorite gathering place of the Impressionists. The pastel colors of spring and the clear light provided Monet with a pretext for an almost purely chromatic interpretation of nature.
